Jim Bates was awarded the FAA July’s Best in Show for his watercolor painting “MJ”.
MJ was such a musical icon and when he died, I was inspired to capture his image. The brilliant colors were created by using layers of primary colors, no black, and using masking fluid as a 4th color.
Jim Bates, a California native, studied advertising art at The Art Center School. In Los Angeles, his representation watercolors are painted using only three primary colors, much in the old-master style of oil painting. Jim has become skilled at the techniques of applying may transparent layers and glazes that create luminous and vibrant paintings. Jim’s inspiration comes from slice-of-life moments. Some tell stories, while other capture a fleeting glimpse of the past. His watercolors grace homes throughout the United States and in Europe and Japan.
